cPanel File Manager Interface

The File Manager interface in your cPanel control panel lets you manage and edit your files.

Accessing the File Manager interface

Login to your cPanel control panel using your web browser. Go to 'http://www.yourdomain.com/cpanel/' (without the quotation marks). So if your domain name is 'example.com' you should go to 'http://www.example.com/cpanel/' to login to your control panel. The File Manager interface is in the "Files" tab, simply click on the name or the icon to enter.

Creating a new file

  • Find and click "+ File" icon in the File Manager toolbar on the top of the screen. A new window will show up.
  • Enter the new file's name in the "New File Name:" text box.
  • Enter the location where the system will save the file in the "New file will be created in:" text box.
  • Click "Create New File" button.

Creating a new folder

  • Find and click "+ Folder" icon in the File Manager toolbar on the top of the screen. A new window will show up.
  • Enter the new folder's name in the "New Folder Name:" text box.
  • Enter the location where the system will create the folder "New folder will be created in:" text box.
  • Click "Create New Folder" button.

Moving a file to a folder

  • Find and select the file you want to move.
  • Find and click "Move" icon in the File Manager toolbar on the top of the screen. A new window will show up.
  • Enter the path that you want to move the file to in the "Enter the file path that you want to move this file to:" text box.
  • Click "Move File(s)" button.

Please note that you can also drag a file icon into a new destination folder.


Moving multiple files to a folder

  • Find and select the files you want to move while holding down the "Shift" key on your keyboard.
  • Find and click "Move" icon in the File Manager toolbar on the top of the screen. A new window will show up.
  • Enter the path that you want to move the files to in the "Enter the file path that you want to move this file to:" text box.
  • Click "Move File(s)" button.

Please note that you can also drag a file icon into a new destination folder.


Renaming a file

  • Find and select the file you want to rename.
  • Find and click "Rename" icon in the File Manager toolbar on the top of the screen. A new window will show up.
  • Enter the new file's name in the "New File Name:" text box.
  • Click "Rename File" button.

Renaming a folder

  • Find and select the folder you want to rename.
  • Find and click "Rename" icon in the File Manager toolbar on the top of the screen. A new window will show up.
  • Enter the new folder's name in the "New File Name:" text box.
  • Click "Rename File" button.

Copying a file

  • Find and select the file you want to copy.
  • Find and click "Copy" icon in the File Manager toolbar on the top of the screen. A new window will show up.
  • Enter the path that you want to copy the file to in the "Enter the file path that you want to copy this file to:" text box.
  • Click "Copy File(s)" button.

Please note that you can't copy a file within the same folder.


Copying multiple files

  • Find and select the files you want to copy while holding down the "Shift" key on your keyboard.
  • Find and click "Copy" icon in the File Manager toolbar on the top of the screen. A new window will show up.
  • Enter the path that you want to copy the file to in the "Enter the file path that you want to copy this file to:" text box.
  • Click "Copy File(s)" button.

Modifying file and folder permissions

  • Find and select the files and folder you want to change permissions of. You can select multiple while holding down the "Shift" key on your keyboard.
  • Find and click "Permissions" icon in the File Manager toolbar on the top of the screen. A new window will show up.
  • Modify the permission level by clicking the checkboxes.
  • Click "Change Permissions" button.

Please note that this setting's permissions default to 0644.


Deleting files and folders

When you delete files and folders, the application does not delete the files permanently and moves them to the "Trash" folder instead. You can click "Empty Trash" to permanently delete the contents of the Trash folder.
  • Find and select the files and folder you want to delete. You can select multiple while holding down the "Shift" key on your keyboard.
  • Find and click "Delete" icon in the File Manager toolbar on the top of the screen. A new window will show up.
  • Click "Trash File(s)" button.

Restoring files and folders

When you delete files and folders, the application does not delete the files permanently and moves them to the "Trash" folder instead. You can click "Empty Trash" to permanently delete the contents of the Trash folder.
  • Find and select the files and folder you want to delete. You can select multiple while holding down the "Shift" key on your keyboard.
  • Find and click "Delete" icon in the File Manager toolbar on the top of the screen. A new window will show up.
  • Click "Trash File(s)" button.

Uploading a file

  • Go to the folder you want to upload the file to.
  • Find and click "Upload" icon in the File Manager toolbar on the top of the screen. A new window will show up.
  • Click "Select File" button and select the file you want to upload.

Please note that you can not upload folder through File Manager interface. You should first create the folders in the application, then upload the files into them.


Downloading files

  • Go to the folder you want to download the file(s) from.
  • Find and click "Download" icon in the File Manager toolbar on the top of the screen.

Other Functions

  • Edit: Opens the selected file in an editor for editing.
  • HTML Edit: Opens the selected file in a visual HTML editor for editing.
  • Extract: Extracts *.zip, *.Gz, or *.Bz2 compressed archive files.
  • Compress: Compresses selected files or folders to a single *.zip, *.Gz, or *.Bz2 compressed archive file.
  • Password Protect: Sets a username and password for a folder in order to restrict access to it.
  • Leech Protection: Redirects accounts that exceed a set number of logins in a two hour period to a selected URL, or receive an internal server error.
  • Manage Indices: Customizes the way users view a directory on the web.
